The Lok Sabha is set to take up several important bills for consideration and passage on Friday as part of the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, which is scheduled to continue until August 21.
Kicking off the day’s legislative agenda, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will move the Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024. The bill seeks to ensure reservation for Scheduled Tribes in Goa’s Legislative Assembly under Article 332 of the Constitution, following the inclusion of certain communities in the state’s ST list.
Following that, Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal will present two key bills:
- The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2024, aimed at updating and unifying India’s maritime laws in accordance with international conventions. The bill intends to strengthen maritime safety, promote the Indian shipping industry, and better manage the country’s mercantile marine.
- The Indian Ports Bill, 2025, which seeks to modernize port regulations and enhance port governance and infrastructure across the country.
In the area of public health, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav will make a formal statement on the implementation status of recommendations made in the 137th and 150th reports of the Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare. The reports focus on COVID-19 vaccine development, distribution management, and pandemic mitigation strategies.
Meanwhile, Congress MP Shafi Parambil is scheduled to introduce a Private Members’ Resolution urging the government to take “appropriate measures to regulate airfare” across the country, amid ongoing concerns over rising flight prices.
In the Rajya Sabha, AAP MP Sanjay Singh has submitted a Rule 267 notice seeking suspension of regular business to discuss the 25% tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian exports. Singh emphasized the economic and diplomatic implications of the move, calling for an urgent debate.
Both Houses of Parliament have witnessed frequent disruptions and heated exchanges in the early days of the Monsoon Session. However, with several key pieces of legislation on the agenda, Friday is expected to see substantive legislative proceedings.
